the chook coop blog

Hello chicken keepers!

Coop cleaning: it’s a dirty job but someone’s gotta do it! But if you’re trying to make the coop nice and comfy for your chooks, you might want to reconsider the tools you’re using. Once, as I was cleaning my coop, I had to get right into a particularly tough stain. As I was scrubbing I suddenly felt myself getting very woozy - not from the hard work! - but from the smell of cleaning products. Then I thought about my poor girls trying to cozy up that night! Never again!

chicken coop cleaning tips Keeping your coop clean the natural way is as easy as cracking an egg, and way better for both your girls and you. In this week’s Mother Hen Tips I’ll explain how:

  • Trust in the potency of citrus! It doesn’t just smell fantastic - it’s also an amazing cleaning agent, especially combined with vinegar to clean and disinfect. What about apple cider vinegar? Even better!
  • Scatter herbs around the coop to improve respiratory health, and keep away nasty mites and lice. Lavender and mint are divine for your chooks.
  • Top it off with a bit of diatomaceous earth to really send those mites and lice on their heels!

All you need to get rid of those stains can be found in your kitchen pantry! For everything else, there’s Backyard Chicken Coops ;)
