Hello chicken keepers!

My, my, isn’t this a bright idea?

The biggest reason many people keep chickens is for the eggs (until they get to know these fun-loving girls a little better, that is!). And while I love my retired girls, even I have to admit that those delicious bum nuts really sweeten the pot, or pan. Light bulbs just won’t cut it!

So, when I decided to profile the Layers, Lovers and Divas, it made sense to let the egg come first! This week, we start with the best Layers of the chook world. These chicken breeds just know how to pop one out:

  1. Isa Browns: Everybody knows about the trusty Isa Brown! This gentle, hardy chicken breed is also an egg-straordinary egg laying talent.
  2. Australorp: Aussie, Aussie, Aussie - cluck, cluck, cluck! My absolute favourite: I’ll personally vouch for their eggceptional egg laying ability, and happy-go-clucky Aussie attitude!
  3. Leghorn: Mama mia! These Italian chooks can be a bit more flighty than the others on this list, but when it comes to laying they are every bit as clucky.
  4. Rhode Island Red: You’ve probably seen this chook everywhere and not even realised! They are found in paintings, sign and memorabilia all over the world. And for good reason - these girls are egg-laying maestros.

If you’re already dreaming of day after day of tasty breakfasts, then these are the chicken breeds for you. Although I’ll always barrack for the mighty Australorp. Check back next week for my Lovers edition, lovebirds!
