Hello chicken keepers,

Or maybe I should say, hello future chicken keepers! If you are wondering whether keeping a fabulous flock of backyard hens is the right choice for you, then you’ve come to the right corner of the internet coop. As a seasoned chook lady, and the founder of Backyard Chicken Coops, I think chickens make the best backyard pets. And for good reason! Chooks aren’t what naysayers will have you believe. They aren't just a bunch of brainless birds that potter about your back paddock. There are many chicken myths that exist and I’m here to bin those blatant lies like the bad eggs they are. Here are my top 3 reasons why chickens make the best pets.

chickens have personality

1. Individuals - Inside and out

Chickens are smart, funny and good looking. Chook Ladies and Hen Lads know that the chicken world is a veritable cornucopia of plumage, personalities and switched on birds that will steal your heart and a hug or two. Every chook is an individual, inside and out. Some chickens are docile and affectionate and others are active and entertaining! Learn more about chicken personalities here and pretty plumage here.

2. Eggs, eggs, eggs!

Most chicken keepers get into the chook keeping game for one reason - eggs! And who can blame them? Collecting delicious, fresh and organic cackleberries from your backyard coop is a fantastic way to start the day. Not only do you get a nutrient and protein rich breakfast, you also have peace of mind knowing exactly how your eggs have been produced and that your laying hens are living happy and healthy lives.

chickens are good for your gardens

3. Backyard battlers

Whether you’re a keen green thumb or a veggie patch dabbler, chickens make the perfect addition to your backyard and garden. They provide nutrient rich manure, improve your compost, turn and till your garden soil and make light work of garden grubs and pests. They show up to work early and will toil until sundown, all for a simple meal and the perfect place to roost.

Of course, these are just some of the reasons backyard chickens are the pet of choice for you. Still need convincing? Have a peck here for even more. After some more cheeky chook action? Of course you are! Join the flock on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest!
