Want to get one or two chickens, but don’t know where to start? Congratulations - and welcome to the world of backyard chicken keeping!

You generally don’t see chickens in the pet shop window like dogs or cats, so where do you go to find the perfect chicken? Well, you have a few different options you can choose from.

Here are some ways to find the perfect pet chicken you’ve been searching for:

1. Breeders

If you do a search of chicken breeders in your town or city, it should come up with different poultry breeders in your region. Sometimes these breeders will specialize in one particular breed, others will breed a few. Also, you might be able to get fertile eggs or baby chickens from these breeders.

2. Online poultry classifieds

Certain websites act as a ‘buy and sell’ where you as a prospective chicken keeper can browse and see what’s available. It’s a great way to see what chickens are ready to buy in your area, and you can contact the sellers directly.

Our friends at Chicken Sales have created a comprehensive online poultry classifieds website that makes it easier to find the right birds for your flock. Taking into account all this information about what people want, they’ve created a way for you to search the attributes that you want, and see filtered results. You can search specific breeds, species (ducks, geese, quails), or you can just search what's nearby to your postcode - you can make the search as narrow or as broad as you want!

3. Newspapers/pocket traders

Check the ‘classifieds’ section of your local paper - sometimes breeders or people selling a few chickens will advertise their poultry in there. Have a browse and see if anything takes your fancy!
