Hello chicken keepers!

A lot of chook lovers worry about their girls in winter. Is it too cold? Is it too damp? Am I feeding them enough? Last week I had a peck at caring for your girls in general during the chillier months. This week I want to have a little fun and show you some tasty winter treats to feed your chooks to keep them happy and healthy. Your chickens will benefit from a dusk feeding of warming food to keep their body temp optimal during a frosty night. Here's some easy ideas for what to make 'em!

Protein Porridge

Nothing says warm winter treats like a big bowl of porridge! Your girls will go bonkers for this super easy treat, simply place some oats and a handful of mealworms in a bowl and add warm water! Voila!

Tuna and Corn Casserole

Tuna gives your girls a great protein boost while they go through or finish their moult and corn will raise their body temp (plus they LOVE it) for some serious perch snuggling. Simply place some freshly shucked corn or dried corn kernels in a bowl with a tin of unflavoured tuna. Easy peasy!

Garlic and Apple Cider Vinegar Soup

Ok so while this is a very loose interpretation of a soup I don't think chooks should miss out on the most quintessential winter treat! Simply add 10ml of ACV and half a clove of crushed garlic to a cup of hot water and leave to steep for 10 minutes. Add this concoction to your chicken flock's daily water supply first thing in the morning to help keep tummy parasites away.

As well as providing your flock with comforting seasonal treats, preparing nutritious meals for optimal chicken health can be stressful and confusing. Many health issues experienced by our girls are due to an imbalanced diet. You might find yourself asking: what to feed, when to feed, how to feed, and why?!

Cluckily, there is no need to be overwhelmed by all the options because our friends at Chickenpedia can help you find out what’s best for your flock at all ages. This is why I recommend their Feeding Pecking Chickens Course to all my readers. Through their course, unearth nutrient rich foods to help your chickens stay healthy, live longer, and produce the best eggs. Keep those yolks nice and yellow! The course shares advice and information on the best food for your flock as well as quantity control, storage, and timing for feeds.
