Hello chicken keepers,
You may have heard or read that as of July 1st 2018 Brisbane chicken keepers have to obtain a self-assessed Livestock Permit from Brisbane City Council to lawfully keep chickens in their backyard. Here is an overview of the info you need to know if you are, or plan to be, keeping chickens in Brisbane under the Brisbane City Council.
If your residential premises has a total area less than 800 square metres you can keep up to six poultry. Household premises with a total area of more than 800 square metres can keep up to 20 poultry.
Brisbane chicken keepers should note that Brisbane City Council introduced new legislation concerning backyard chicken keeping on the 1st July 2018.
"From 1 July 2018, the keeping of poultry in a residential area requires a livestock permit. There is no fee associated with the keeping of poultry, including chickens, for domestic purposes in Brisbane." - Brisbane City Council
Other guidelines:
- make sure your poultry shed will not cause a nuisance to your neighbours
- keep conditions clean to prevent odour and fly breeding
- ensure animals and animal waste is kept or disposed of in a manner that prevents a breeding place for pests
- consider the risk to the health or safety of surrounding persons and animals
- where poultry is kept in a residential area, other than a rural or rural residential area, a livestock permit is required.
