Hello chicken keepers,
I have a coop-fession to make. I am a chook nerd. I am flappin’ fascinated by chicken breeds and the wildly diverse range of plumage and personalities that chooks can posses. You too? Egg-cellent, you’re in the right place! Each week I will shine the coop light on a different chook for us to coo over. Let’s have a cluck about the debonair and dashing Araucana chicken breed!
The Araucana Chicken Breed
Araucanas are a charming chicken breed originating from South America. In fact they are the only chook breed that is thought to have originated from that continent! Araucana chickens are defined by their ability to lay blue eggs - a rarity in the chicken world - and their distinct physical features. They can sport face tufts that resemble a dandy gentleman’s moustache and, in some rare strains, a rumpless body. There is a European strain of Araucana chicken that displays a beard, muff and tail feathers while still laying their trademark blue eggs. The Araucana chicken breed is active, alert and hardy and they make an entertaining and adventurous backyard bird.
